Read a good book. Meet new and interesting people who've read it too. Feed your brain...and your stomach. For a list of our past reads, please see the calendar or the photo album. Our focus is on finding worthwhile literature and still covering a variety of eras, countries and fiction (and once in a while, non-fiction) genres. We try to find books that are a manageable length (200-350 pages) and that make us think. (Our members are well-educated, but note that the majority of us do not have E …
They just don't write em' like they used to! We'll have a casual chat about a new classic each time. We can meet whenever and wherever. Not all book clubs have to gather at a coffee shop :-) Some titles already on the list include Anna Karenina, Dracula and Catcher in the Rye. I want the rest of the group to pick some titles, as well. I'm going for a very laid-back kind of gathering. So, let's all put on our smarty pants and share a few laughs and conversation!

Hello: I am an English professor who has studied and taught literature of the Caribbean Diaspora. I have a passion for fiction novels in particular and would like to find other people who are interested in reading and discussing a range of books from the English, French, Spanish and Dutch Caribbean. We will also explore literature by people of Caribbean heritage (Afro-Caribbean, British-Caribbean, Canadians of Caribbean heritage, and so on). The idea is to gain a sense of the breadth and richnes …

Inspired by a recent story in the Wall Street Journal, about a long-running reading group in which the members read books aloud -- 35 or so pages a meeting -- they've read Dickens, Milton, Tolstoy, Faulkner, the Brontes, Eliot, Austen. In addition to the book we're reading (our first is The Transit of Venus), we've begun meetings by reading other short pieces or poems.
After three years of reading Hemingway and his peers, the Hemingway Book Club is changing. Starting in 2013, the group will choose books from the Modern Library's list of top 100 20th Century English language novels. Please join us as we discover and reread some of the best works of the modern age.

This book club will cover great literary works such as Hemingway, Dickens, Shelley, Bronte, Milton, to more recent authors like...humm...let me think--okay---let's face it, English degree = reading lots of dead authors. But really, let's read some great classics, and a little new stuff too. :) This group is aimed at 25-35 year-old people (give or take a few years) who like to get together over drinks or a meal and have critical discussions about the classics. Please read on to find out how we r …

Welcome to the Latin American & Spanish Book Club! More than a club, this is a space for people who find pleasure reading literature from Latin America and Spain. We will read non-fiction, fiction, articles, chronicles, essays, poetry, short stories and novels. The only requirement is that it is in Spanish. Calling anyone interesting in joining a new book group. The group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Church (19 Jay Street) in New London. There will be a $1 fee to cover meetup cost. All are invited to bring something to munch or drink that will serve six. I'm a high school English teacher who has always longed to be part of a vibrant book club, and meet other book lovers in the process. In my "Book It' fantasy, we read contemporary fiction, best-se …
Our passion is teaching English to immigrants...and learning English from experts! Join us to study English in a loose, closely knit group, among friends. Not your regular classroom setting, but caring and sharing. Here is a post about the literature classes that I posted in my blog in May of 2011. It has links to the text and a bit about them.

So here's the deal: Let's get together once/month over food or drinks to discuss a work by a Nobel Prize Winner. The books will tend to be thought-provoking, so we should have some pretty engaging and passionate discussions. You don't need to be an English major -- just open-minded, friendly, and willing to get dirty with some heavy-duty literature. This is a new MeetUp, so I'll definitely be open to suggestions regarding the best way to organize our meet ups. Here's what the current plan is: Ea …
June is a month a page of blocks on paper the 16th of June a block on a page under pages of blocks on a calendar that says we will have spring though its cold and chilly and time marches on and the 16th of June arrives before I do muddy and green and unread. Every year Bloomsday arrives and I haven’t read the damned book, but this year I will crack the nut, but I don’t have to crack it alone, and neither do you. Let’s read Ulysses together, all those words strung together like a necklace of ice …

Do you love literature and perhaps music and art as well--but somehow you’ve never really “got” poetry? Would you like to learn to get the joy from poems you get from other works of art without going through English Lit 101 again? If your answers are yes I can help. It started with a friend whom I met in discussion groups of Joyce’s Ulysses and Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past. He loved literature and music (he was a Jazz musician and is very knowledgeable about classical music as well). Yet, …
